Upon a Midday Clear
by Loren Robinson

View in Library Catalog

This is a tale of kindness begetting kindness. A family with a young daughter that needs an operation to walk is struggling with money. Friends and coworkers offer to help, but the amount needed is substantially more than can be raised. But then simple acts of kindness from the family touch someone who is in a real position to help, and they do. The story, set at Christmas, is applicable for the whole year through.

Only The Beautiful
by Susan Meissner

Only the Beautiful is a historical novel, told in two timelines, that tells the story of Rosie and Helen. Rosie an orphan who is placed in the care of her parent’s former employers the Calvert’s, and Helen the sister of Mr. Calvert, who is in Europe. Part one is about Rosie and part two is about Helen’s efforts to find her. Rosie is treated by the Calvert’s as a maid. Rosie accepts her fate, but, as her mother instructed, keeps a secret of her ability to see colors when she hears sounds. This phenomenon was not understood at this time and was seen as a sign of mental illness. Her employer finds out about Rosie’s secrete. Rosie becomes pregnant and is sent to a state home, to cure her disability, instead of a home for unwed mothers. Here, so-called inherited flaws are not tolerated, and Rosie undergoes a difficult time. In part two, Helen returns to the US and embarks on a mission to find Rosie.

Into The Abyss
by Brenda K. Davies

I love the story of Magnus and Amalia. She wasn’t necessarily a strong fighter, but she was strong in other ways that were just as important. I loved exploring a new plane, the Abyss, and learning of the history of the Djinn and Fae. I love these characters so much.

The Measure
by Nikki Erlick

One day, all over the world, people who are 22 years old or older, are waking up to a simple little box sitting by their front door. The inscription says, "The measure of your life lies within". What is inside the box is just a simple piece of string. It's significance is quickly realized and how individuals and society deal with it is the story. I thought the author did a wonderful job equating issues in our society to the short-stringers versus long-stringers in the book. It is a very thought provoking book on many levels.

The Bookshop By The Bay
by Pamela M. Kelley

The Bookshop by the Bay is a wonderful story of two lifelong girlfriends who are experiencing changes in their worlds. Both have daughters who are also drawn into their mothers’ sudden decision to purchase a well established bookstore. The current owner of the shop just happens to be ready to retire and there is a failed coffee shop in the next storefront. This is a predictable but pleasant book to enjoy on the beach, poolside, under a tree in the backyard or any place we give ourselves the pleasure of reading.

Avid Reader

I had high hopes for this book but as I slogged through it I began to loses interest and couldn't keep the friends, family and other names straight. But what I loved was any passages about his personal life and the "behind the scenes" with famous writers. He's the editor behind so many books, Catch 22 notwithstanding. He has worked in publishing as well has written a great deal and expressed an incredible love of dance. An okay book but not my most favorite memoir to date.

The Housemaid
by Freida Mcfadden

View in Library Catalog

A young ex-con , Millie, is hired as a housemaid for a family that appears to have it all. From the outset Nina and her daughter Cece act strangely as Millie takes the brunt of it. Of course falling for Andrew, the handsome husband is only a matter of time as he is painted as he victimized spouse. However things are not as they seem as this novel takes a few twists. A fast read but not a very original plot.
