How To Love Your Daughter
by Hila Blum

I am sure that there is much to this book that I have missed in symbolism, but I liked it so much it didn't matter. The perspectives of mothers: especially as the narrator explains about her daughter and mom was telling and relatable. I rooted for her and her daughter. A really different book than I'm used to or expected.

You Were Always Mine

This is a moving novel about a black woman who finds an abandoned white baby, sending her in a journey of flashbacks of her past, and family. In addition to the theme of motherhood Cinnamon recounts personal experiences in foster care, marriage and race. This book opened my heart to foster care in various capacities.

Walking With Sam
by Andrew McCarthy

This is the story of this teen actor (now best selling author and travel enthusiast) returning to Spain for a 500-mile walk with his 19 year old son. Andrew walked this path about 25 years earlier and he expresses both experiences with joy and awe. I loved the parent perspective Andrew gives to the adventure and the stories of the duo on the road with other pilgrims. Another unexpected terrific book.

Lift And Separate

really enjoyed this well written and funny book. While at times there were some serious topics tackled in the book, the author knew how to use humor in a way that was sensitive to the topics but still hilarious . Marcy seemingly has a happy marriage with her husband, Harvey. But after he experiences a mid life crisis, he cheats on her and dissolves all notions of her perfect marriage. Add to that her mother is experiencing a health crisis. It causes Marcy to re-examine her life and see what she wants to do now things are no longer the same. There were many funny scenes and the characters were endearing. I recommend this book

What In God's Name

This was a really great short read. It made me wish I could see the TV series that it turned into. I really liked the characters and wish I could hear more of their stories. It also kind of made me fear my mortality but it was still a nice book.

Schizophrenia was diagnosed in one of the twin sisters. The voices began in her freshman year at Brown University. This illness allowed her sister, who was always in the background, to excel. She graduated from Howard & became a psyciatrist. This helped her to make headway with her sisters illness. The sisters remained close, speaking a few times a week on the phone. Very heartwarming story.
