The Old Man And The Gun
by David Grann

View in Library Catalog

Three amazing true stories by this great investigative reporter. The stories in this collection are all exciting, unusual, well thought out and fascinating. The title story is my favorite. The Old Man is a gentleman now in his mid-70’s, a notorious, but unusually well-dressed lifelong bank robber, with a habit of escaping from prison quite often. David Grann is in my opinion a great journalist with a real flair for capturing the flavor of events.

The Death Of Ivan Ilych
by Leo Tolstoy

Wonderful, just wonderful! The writing, the insight, the way the author can present a situation of a man experiencing his own death and agony, and yet you, as the reader, become entranced and can so clearly see what the man is thinking and experiencing, such a conflict of thoughts, emotions, and fear. Can’t believe I haven’t had the gift of reading Tolstoy before now and can’t wait to read something else by him.

The Happiness Plan

Another wonderful novel from one of my favorite authors! She brings back Hannah from Sisters by Choice 15 years later. Hannah has formed a new family with her friends Tori and Daphne, as well as the 3 brothers they are involved with. It is beautifully written and the supportive relationships are real. All the women struggle with problems and eventually resolve them. As a bonus, there are furry pets too!

The 23rd Midnight

The latest book in the Women's Murder Club series and it's just as good as the others. A killer is out there and he seems to be the same one Detective Boxer put away in San Quentin. Is it a copycat killer? This one gets personal as one of the Women's Murder Club's own is kidnapped by the killer. Fast-action thrills. Enjoy!

The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo
by Taylor Jenkins Reid

This novel is well written and I can confidently say that from reading it, I was able to perfectly visualize the storyline. An aging Hollywood movie icon is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandoluos life. The author Taylor Jenkins Reid did a great job in creating a read with drama, love, loyalty, disloyalty, and LGBTQ. recognition in the novel. The book left me with many emotions for the different characters.

Social Engagement

Trigger warning: bulimia and eating disorders. The story spans over a period of just under a year and follows Callie and her rich friend Virginia and how Virginia's family has influenced her highly. Callie is toxic to herself, but as you read the story you wonder who to blame for her behavior and choices. The ending is left a little open and there is not a lot of closure.

Lady Tan's Circle of Women
by Lisa See

I have loved most of Lisa See's books and this one reminded me of why. This book is set during China's Ming Dynasty and is inspired by the life of Tan Yunxian, a female published physician. We meet her as a young girl and get snippets of her life through the years.

Cursed

I loved this duology. It was definitely darker than I expected, but that made it all the better as the the risk felt real. I was hanging on every word until the end, and I couldn’t figure out how the MCs would get their HEA. I almost wondered if the wouldn’t. But they were clever and won in the end!
