Dinners With Ruth
by Nina Totenberg

View in Library Catalog

Dinners With Ruth is a wonderful story about Totenberg and the many interesting and powerful people with whom she shared her life’s journey. For many years Totenberg has been a correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR). About four years before she arrived at NPR, a legal brief about discrimination “on the basis of sex” authored by Ruth Bader Ginzberg stimulated her interest and curiosity. It was the beginning of a wonderful friendship for both of the women that extended to their husbands and families. I read the audio book which was narrated by the author and featured several performances by world-renowned concert violinist, Roman Totenberg, Nina’s father.

THE SPECTACULAR

I likes this book. Set in 1956, this book brought back many memories. Radio City Music Hall was one of my favorite theaters. The story involves love, mystery and sacrifice. It also retells the horror of the "Mad Bomber". It's a coming of age story for women in a male dominated society.

The White Darkness

A fascinating true story of Henry Worsley, a born leader and man obsessed with exploring the challenging, breathtaking beautiful terrain of Antarctica, following in the footsteps of his idol Ernest Shackleton. Very well written, that it made you feel like you were on the journey with him, which I would never do in person. Reading about it was enough for me.

Wicked Fox

I loved this book! All the threads came together in such an unexpected way. If the MCs mom had not kept her secrets, so much drama could have been avoided. She loved her daughter, but her pride got in the way of a fully trusting relationship. But I’m excited for whenever book two comes out!

Where Are The Children ?

Before I read the sequel to this book which I read when it was first published in the 1970s, I thought I’d reread this to refresh my memory. I love a good mystery, full of twists and surprises. I enjoyed this one as much this time as my younger self did. It was a quick read and I’m looking forward to the sequel.

Upon a Midday Clear

This is a tale of kindness begetting kindness. A family with a young daughter that needs an operation to walk is struggling with money. Friends and coworkers offer to help, but the amount needed is substantially more than can be raised. But then simple acts of kindness from the family touch someone who is in a real position to help, and they do. The story, set at Christmas, is applicable for the whole year through.

This is a wonderful book about Anke Hoff, a midwife who is a prisoner in a labor camp during WWII. She and her family have been arrested for their anti Nazi feelings. Now Anke has been chosen to look after Eva Braun, Hitler's mistress. She has no choice and is hoping by doing so she and her family will be released.

Lessons In Chemistry

This story is about how women are degraded in the business world. All of Elizabeth’s experiments on paper are stolen from her for her boss to use with his name falsely getting credit. He also tries to fire her, but she talks her way out of it. He tries sexual advances, but she pulls out her carving knife, which causes him to have a heart attack. She quits the job and is offered a cooking show, which is a great success because she uses her chemistry knowledge with her recipes.

A Death At The Party

When I was first reading this book, I disliked it. Way too many characters introduced at once, but like a good author does, as a reader it makes me suspect everyone and anyone who is dead. You already know at the beginning who the killer is and as the story progressed you get more and more suspicious of who is dead and why.
