Tomorrow, And Tomorrow, And Tomorrow

This is widely considered one of the biggest books of the last 12 months. I thought it was really well written, but I do wish the story made a little more sense. I feel like the characters lacked growth, which may have been the whole point, but I personally want to see character growth as that is what I believe makes a good story. I also think (spoiler alert) the killing of Marx was kind of a cop-out, especially since (spoiler) it didn't lead to them being together in the end. If that was the case, I also didnt get the focus on Sam's loneliness. But overall the story was entertaining

We Were The Lucky Ones By Georgia Hunter

This story took place during WW11 in Poland. It’s about a family torn apart for safety from the nazi invasion. They spread out through Europe. This was inspired by the author’s family story. The human spirit finds a way to keep alive. The title shows, when things look the bleakest, survival overcomes the worst.

Famous In A Small Town
by Viola Shipman

This sweet novel explores inter generational friendships, the power of women, while showcasing small town life in Michigan. I loved the characters and the setting, and although the ending is predictable, it still held my interest. I’m not a traveler, but the town is one I’d enjoy visiting. While I read, I thought how nice it would be if some recipes were included. Surprise! There was one at the end which I just might try.

A Christmas Memory

This is a beautiful tale of a young boy’s struggle for survival within a troubled family. Parents separated and headed for divorce, they move to a new state where the boy’s new teacher takes delight in being truly men to the students and of course the new boy is bullied. Then Henry meets the man who lives next door and is his life is changed. The neighbor not only befriends him at his greatest time of need but passes along some life lessons just at the right time. My only suggestions would be different title, as Christmas plays a small part in the story and only at the very end.

Sometimes I Lie

Amber has been in a terrible accident and is in a coma. She can still hear what's happening around her but cannot communicate. Her thoughts keep going back to her childhood and her family while alternating with trying to figure out how she ended up in the hospital. I usually love Ms. Feeney's psychological thrillers, but this one left me cold.

Forgotten In Death
by J. D. Robb

Once again, we meet Lt. Eve Dallas and it is a very busy day, even for her. Within a single day, she is handed responsibility for three murders, two recent and one over thirty years old. The cases are somewhat intertwined, involving two construction companies, one legitimate, and one not quite legitimate. It is actually operated by the Russian mob. Eve’s husband, Roarke, becomes actively involved in helping the Lieutenant and provided very useful background information. Dallas solves the two recent murders first, then moves to the decades-old murder, which is actually a double murder since the young woman murdered was 38 weeks pregnant and fully viable. In the NY of this novel, killing a viable fetus is considered a homicide. The solution of these murders is closely tied to the companies involved in the first homicides.

Snow

The only thing better than a classic mystery is a classic mystery set in the Irish countryside in 1957 and that is what this is. A priest dies and is mutilated at an isolated estate and although 5 people were at home at the time, no one saw anything. Everyone seems to be hiding something, but who has a motive? And the detective seems to be dealing with his own demons and this case is making that worse. Then a police officer turns up dead and everything is intensified. Wonderful read.

The Elephant Keeper's Daughter

An excellent historical novel that takes place in the early 19th century when Ceylon (Sri Lanka) was being colonized by the British. I became engrossed in the story of Phera and her family. Be warned that there are scenes of extreme brutality.
