Tomorrow, And Tomorrow, And Tomorrow
by Gabrielle Zevin

This is widely considered one of the biggest books of the last 12 months. I thought it was really well written, but I do wish the story made a little more sense. I feel like the characters lacked growth, which may have been the whole point, but I personally want to see character growth as that is what I believe makes a good story. I also think (spoiler alert) the killing of Marx was kind of a cop-out, especially since (spoiler) it didn't lead to them being together in the end. If that was the case, I also didnt get the focus on Sam's loneliness. But overall the story was entertaining

The Spectacular

I loved this book. I didn't know anything about the history of the Rockettes or the Mad Bomber in NY at that time. The story was interesting. The characters were likeable, except the ones that weren't supposed to be, and it was a fast read. One thing bothered me though. The main character, Marion, is 19 years old in most of the book and seemed way more mature than any 19 year old would be in the 50s. I'm curious if anyone else felt that Marion spoke and thought way beyond her years.

The Elephant Keeper's Daughter

An excellent historical novel that takes place in the early 19th century when Ceylon (Sri Lanka) was being colonized by the British. I became engrossed in the story of Phera and her family. Be warned that there are scenes of extreme brutality.

The Golden Doves

Interesting story about two WWII Resistence Fighters in France who go on to bring war criminals to justice. The two main characters: Josie Anderson, American daughter of a Diplomat and a Parisian Singer, and Arlette LaRue, Parisian orphan and unwed mother were young and brave throughout the story. Martha Hall Kelly weaves an engaging story based on research.

I was really surprised by this book. I loved the format it was written in, as a story within a story. The mystery continued throughout and it was just exciting to read. I'm looking forward to reading more by the author!

River Sing Me Home

I listened as an audio book and loved the lilting accents. This book starts in 1843 at the Providence plantation in Barbados. The slaves are told that they're free but still have to work for another six years. Rachel runs. Then Rachel starts a journey and searches for her five children who were sold. She adds some traveling companions, traveling on a river and then by sea.

The House of Lincoln

This historical fiction is written from the point of view Anna, a Portuguese refugee, who works for the Lincoln family. This book is more a study of living in those times then an in depth learning about Abraham Lincoln.
