Dressing Barbie

Just on the heels of the Barbie movie, I found a feature article that led me to this book and the story of one of the first and long-time designers of Barbie fashions. I recognized many of the fashions and dolls from the 60s through 90s but never owned more than one doll and clothes (saw one fashion item I had in the book). I was a latecomer to Barbie at 10 years old but always loved the various types of dolls and personalities she represented. This was such a great book for anyone who loves fashion, toys and memories.

Kiss of Death

Hawk is one of my top two favorite characters in the series. I am so happy he gets his HEA with Aisling. They were such a good match given their histories. We also got to meet River and Kobal’s son. Everyone’s reactions to realizing Hawk found his Chosen was entertaining. The town plagued by the Minotaur was super creepy and would make an awesome adventure for a dungeons & dragons game. I’m so glad they got out of the maze and were able to defeat more of their enemies. And the scene at the end with Bale and Wrath was such a good set up for the next, and last, book with an enemies to lovers trope. This trope just doesn’t hit as hard if the characters aren’t trying to kill each other their first meeting.

Excellent piece of historical fiction depicting the interwoven stories of two underrepresented groups during the Civil War - Blacks and Jewish.

This was such a good ending to this story! It was so fun to see events from Air Awakens from a different perspective. I’m glad Vi and Tavyn got their HEA as well. They deserved it.

Algorithms Of Oppression

This was a really interesting book. Since I work in the industry, a lot of this was sadly obvious but it was still informative. The book did get repetitive with its examples, especially including the example of results for "black girls" being porn. It's important yes but there are other examples in the books so it seemed strange it also was so repetitive.

The Color Of Water
by James McBride

When Ruth became pregnant with her husband Dennis's eighth child, James, Dennis fell ill with lung cancer, and died before James was born. Ruth mourned his death deeply and became desperate to find a means to support herself and her eight children. She asked her relatives for help, but they refused to have any sort of contact with her. Ruth met her second husband, Hunter Jordan, soon after. They married and eventually had four children together. Ruth always sent her children to the best schools, no matter the commute, to ensure they received the finest possible education. She demanded respect and hard work from her children, and always treated them tenderly. She had a strong faith in God and strong moral convictions. Issues of race and identity were secondary to moral beliefs. The author’s confusion over his own identity, and grief for the death of his beloved stepfather, Hunter, drove him to drug use and crime. After working with black men in Kentucky, where his sister Jack lives, James became convinced of the importance of self-reliance and hard work. He began to trust in God and to work toward self-improvement, honing his skills in jazz music and writing. During his senior year of high school, James was pleasantly surprised when he learned he had been admitted to Oberlin College. He and his eleven siblings complete college and lead successful careers. Ruth remains close with her children, and, later, her grandchildren, holding holiday gatherings that remind James of his household during childhood: chaotic, but delightfully active and stimulating.
