The 13th Gift
by Joanne Hurst Smith

View in Library Catalog

This is the story of a young family that has been devastated by the death of their husband/father. The family consists of mother, Joanne, Megan, 10, Nick, 12 and Ben, 17. Rick, who recently died is not present in the story, but his presence is very evident. Without any conscious decisions, it appears that the family will not celebrate nor even acknowledge Christmas. Megan especially feels the need to celebrate, but Joanne cannot muster enough enthusiasm to buy gifts for her children, decorate or even buy a tree. Thirteen days before Christmas, however, something mysterious happens; a poinsettia plant is left on their porch, with a note, “On the first day of Christmas your true friends give to you one poinsettia for all of you”, but no identification of the sender. Joanne is inclined to discard it, but keeps it. Every day brings a new secret gift with a note only. As the days go buy, something seems to happen to the family. They are getting more into the Christmas spirit. In a wild flurry of activity, Joanne buys gifts for the children, brings home a tree for them all to decorate. In a complete turnabout, Joanne invites her entire family for Christmas dinner. Christmas magic? Or the realization that someone cared enough to prepare 12 gifts and cards? Perhaps it doesn’t matter. The family came to the realization that life goes on and should be enjoyed to the fullest.

The Escape Room
by Megan Goldin

The Escape Room truly fits the description of "page turner." I was on the edge of my seat while reading the book although I did grow weary of the elevator chapters. None of the four trapped characters was likable or had any redeeming qualities. Money is their higher power and it quickly became evident they would stop at nothing to gain more money. I am so happy my Book Group chose The Escape Room or I probably would have skipped it. I look forward to our discussion of Goldin's work, it should be epic!

The Princess And The Grilled Cheese Sandwich (a Graphic Novel)
by Deya Muniz

So cute! Illustrations were easy on the eyes and the story was super easy to follow and enjoyable. I loved the description in the back that the author and her wife have an actual “history” with grilled cheeses. Great message of finding your own happiness and fighting the status quo along the way.

Violated
by Carolyn Arnold

The FBI is called in on a horrendous crime and are anxious to get to the scene of the crime; not only because of the nature of the crime, but because the main suspect is one of their own, Agent Paige Dawson. She had intended to confront the man who assaulted her best friend some twenty years ago and let him know that even though the law couldn’t touch him, he had ruined the life of a young woman. Instead, she is arrested as a suspect in the murder. As the FBI investigates, however, it becomes obvious that this is the work of a serial killer, rather than an isolated murder, clearing Paige. But there is still a vicious killer out there who must be found.

This is a great graphic novel about finding your voice and being comfortable in your own skin. I loved watching the characters grow and become their own people. It was a great binge worthy read.
